K-tape & IASTAM
About K-Tape & IASTM
K-Tape : Its also known as Kinesiology Taping, is a therapeutic technique that uses an elastic, adhesive tape applied to the skin to support muscles, joints, and soft tissues while allowing a wide range of movement. Unlike rigid athletic tape, K-Tape stretches with the body and can be used during daily activities, exercise, and rehabilitation.
IASTM (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) : IASTM, or Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization, is a hands-on therapeutic technique that uses specially designed instruments to assess and mobilize soft tissues. The instruments are generally made from materials such as stainless steel and are used over muscles, fascia, tendons, and other soft-tissue structures.
K-Tape Application Techniques
Different application patterns can be used depending on the treatment objective. Common shapes include:
I-Strip
A simple strip commonly used along muscles or specific anatomical areas for support and sensory stimulation.
Y-Strip
The tape is divided into two tails and can be positioned around a muscle or targeted area.
X-Strip
The tape is crossed over a particular region and may be useful when support or sensory input is required from different directions.
Fan or Web Technique
Multiple narrow strips are created from a single piece of tape and may be used in soft-tissue or swelling-management applications.
Common IASTM Techniques
IASTM may involve several types of instrument movements, depending on the area being treated and the practitioner’s training.
Gliding
The instrument is moved smoothly along the targeted tissue to assess and mobilize the area.
Scanning
The practitioner uses the instrument to identify areas that feel different in texture or mobility.
Fanning
Multiple directional strokes may be used across a selected region.
Cross-Fiber Technique
The instrument is moved across the direction of the tissue fibers when clinically appropriate.
