About Acupressure

Acupressure is a traditional therapeutic technique that involves applying gentle, controlled pressure to specific points on the body. It is closely related to acupuncture and shares many of the traditional concepts used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). However, instead of needles, acupressure uses fingers, thumbs, palms, or specialized tools to stimulate selected points.

Traditional acupressure theory describes these points as locations along pathways called meridians, through which Qi, or vital energy, is believed to flow. The purpose of treatment is traditionally to encourage balance and support the body’s natural ability to maintain wellbeing.

Acupressure is commonly used as a complementary approach for relaxation, managing certain types of discomfort, reducing muscle tension, and supporting general wellbeing.

Techniques Used in Acupressure

Different techniques may be used depending on the treatment objective.

Sustained Pressure

The practitioner applies steady pressure to a selected point for a specific period.

Circular Pressure

The finger or thumb moves gently in small circular motions over the point.

Pulsed Pressure

Pressure is applied and released rhythmically.

Thumb Pressure

The thumb is commonly used for points requiring controlled pressure.

Finger Pressure

The fingertips may be used for smaller or more sensitive areas.

Palm Pressure

The palm can be used when a broader area needs gentle pressure and relaxation.
